Daisy shares about her inspiration behind Breadline and what keeps her going
What inspired you to set up Breadline?
I worked for many years in Borough Market whilst pursuing my PhD in London. Working in the market taught me a lot about the food system and what can be done to reduce waste from production to consumption. I continued my research in Hong Kong because our food system needs to be more equitable and sustainable.
The idea of Breadline came together over conversations with data scientists, developers, geographers, designers. Everyone had a different perspective, bringing a unique solution to each part of the puzzle. I love collaborating across disciplines, it’s so generative and creative!
"You can’t do everything. But you can do something."
How do you find time to juggle both your full-time job and what you do for Breadline?
I don’t. Many people ask me this, and I don’t want to pretend that I don’t struggle. Yes I prioritise and plan best I can but I also want to be truthful and say I don’t manage to do it all.
Like many women who juggle between their different identities and what’s expected in their roles, we make choices and compromises e.g. between life and work, between fun and responsibility, between health and pleasure, between self and others.
And it’s ok to not do it all.
What keeps you going?
The good people I meet and cross paths with. I’ve been floored by the generosity from strangers, and the talent and expertise that everyone brings to the table.
After a long day, how do you like to unwind?
Swimming is what keeps me sane – I swim in the sea most mornings and it keeps me calm throughout the day.
